You Are What You Eat: Trainer Approved Snacks

It takes more than the right mindset and gear to get the most out of your workout: a good pre-workout snack will give you the energy you need to give it all you’ve got. We ask our trainers to tell us what they munch on before they hit the pit:

Jesse: Steel Cut Oats

I like steel cut oats and putting a bunch of stuff in ‘em: raisins or cranberries, walnuts, chia seeds, nut butter, cinnamon, almond milk, protein powder, maple syrup, or banana slices. It’s easy, and especially yummy with dark maple syrup. This snack is time efficient and has everything you need to be a warrior, including complex carbs, healthy fats, protein and some anti-inflammatory foods.

Saeed: Trail Mix

Trail mix from Bulk Barn or Loblaws with cashews, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, corn nuts, walnuts and raisins: It tastes good and it’s easy to get and eat. Trail mix has a good amount of protein and good fats that can help strengthen muscles and replenish the body. It’s also a great snack for people who work at a desk all day.

Sam: Banana Wrap

Half pre, and half post: Wrap 1 banana in a whole wheat wrap and add peanut butter (or nut butter of your choice) and chia seeds! It’s delicious, full of protein, healthy fats and quick calories: the banana is a simple carb that will fuel your workout and refuel you after. Banana wraps are inexpensive and extremely quick to make and eat. They’re easy to transport and get all 3 macro types in one meal.

Leo: Frozen Mango & Greek Yogurt

I’m a sweets person, I really like frozen treats like ice cream – and frozen mangos? Feels like eating candy. Greek yogurt is tasty and has a high amount of protein, so it’s the best of both worlds.  Combined, they’re a great way to get some fruit and extra protein into your diet. For an added bonus, add granola or dried fruit.

Rejean: Apple & Natural Peanut Butter

For a pre workout snack I like having an apple with some natural peanut butter: it’s quick, easy to digest, includes healthy forms of all 3 macronutrients, tastes great, and is enough to feel satisfied without your stomach feeling heavy. It’s also convenient to have when going straight to the gym from work, or as a quick early morning snack.
